The 10 most commonly asked questions and answers:
What do I expect? This is probably the most difficult Question to answer, because in entails so much. First, what are YOU looking for? A Strict one discipline style only? I. E. Korean, Japanese, Chinese. An American system, MMA? One should carefully decide this when looking for a new system. ROCK DO KWON TM, IS its OWN UNIQUE BLEND OF MANY ARTS. We are very “Traditional”, yet scientific. What you can expect from us is a well rounded, grounded system. Our Instructors have years and years of experience! They are Master Instructors, not 1 st and 2 nd Dans running around trying to teach for a quick buck and then gone tomorrow.
What does ROCK DO KWON mean? In traditional Tae Kwon Do language, DO means the “Way”. KWON means whose school (style) is it? It is Grand Master Rock's! So ROCK DO KWON mean's: “the way of Grandmaster Rock”.
What are Forms/Kata's? Forms are a series of movements, consisting of striking, kicking, punching, throwing etc. strung together to represent a defense to an attack or multiple attacks from different angles. They are a teaching tool to get the student's basic movements flowing, and help them understand the practical application of their techniques. Please refer to the Belting tab for more information.
Do I have to Spar/Fight? That would be a yes and no answer. No, you can elect to do private lessons and or sign up for Tai Chi, Chi-kung classes. In the traditional group classes, it is part of each belting requirement, Yes.
What is Sparring? First it is NOT fighting! It is a very strictly controlled environment, in which student's with the same rank, engage in simulated combat. In today's day and age all safety gear is worn in the gym. Contact varies according to rank. Black Belts use full contact and usually dislike much safety gear, because you won't have any on the street! Under belts have no choice; they will wear all appropriate safety gear.
What is Tai Chi Ch'uan? It is an internal style of Martial Arts. Commonly called Wu-Shu. It is liken to Forms and Kata's, except Tai Chi emphasizes, internal breathing and meditation as it's practiced. Also it is referred to as standing meditation, and one usually “Play's”, Tai Chi.
What does Tae Kwon Do mean? How old is it? Tae Kwon Do means: “The way of hand and foot fighting”. It has also been more loosely described as “to smash or destroy with hand and foot”. Hey I'm just saying it's out there! Some of us old school traditionalists remember this! It is over 2,000 years old. Before 37 B.C.!
What does Kung Fu mean? How old is it? Kung means energy. Fu means time. So Kung Fu means time and energy! Anything that requires time and energy is Kung Fu! Some its anything that requires patience and energy, it's all in whose translation. As is the debate of how old are some of these arts? It is said by the Chinese that it is over 3,000 years old. To this day the debate is still on as to whose is older Chinese or Korean! Please note: I am a Martial Artist, NOT a historian. Thank You.
What are Temple Exercises ? Simply put, there's little difference's if any between Temple Exercises and Chi-Kung exercises. They all come from back when the monks sat for hours in meditation, and had little room for movements like forms. They are forms and standing meditation as well, they are designed to promote circulation and health. And develop muscle strength. An example is “The Eight Pieces Of The Brocade”. This is a set of “ Temple Exercises ”; it is also CHI-KUNG! It is only one set of many.
Can This be My Own System? Yes! We are currently working on a program for Instructors to include ROCK DO KWON TM in their current system or as a standalone system, for those who have reached plateau in their system and are searching for more.
We recognized long ago that when a 2 nd or 3 rd Dan Black Belt split from their system for (whatever reason), and began teaching on their own, were quickly over ran by eager students wanting to learn more. A 3 rd Dan is rarely recognized to promote a 1 st Dan. In most traditional systems a 4 th Dan is still an assistant Instructor! And usually requires the permission of a Master Instructor for this. We have an answer for this and it is coming soon. I will post it as an Instructor tab, as soon as all the details are finalized. Feel free to contact us.
Schools and KWON's
As you will learn there are many different styles of Martial Arts. ROCK DO KWON TM , “ Scientific Combat ” is taught as a streetwise protection system. We incorporate into our system many aspects of JI DO KWON style, Tae KWON Do, as well as Hapkido, Akido, judo, Hungar and Shao-lin Kung-fu, and Tai Chi Ch'uan.
